What video are you using?
I would say thats probably your problem, but with out knowing what card its hard to say.

Scott is assuming that you've tried DOCUMENT PROPERTIES -> COLOR -> VIEWPOINT BACKGROUND -> EDIT...
Also check your video card at:
www.solidworks.com/swdocs/support/html/videoissues/videotest.cfm
