Thanks for your reply. I am a novice microstation user (used acad and ink for years and this may be the one I just won't learn) and couldn't find anything that would allow me to disassociate dimensioning. Presently I've been working under the element-dimensioning menus...Is there something I've missed? Any help will be appreiciated.

Sorry for the slow reply. Most of our clients have their own Microstation standards, so using the automatic dimensioning wastes time since it's so tough to get it to dimension in the correct manner to suit the client's standards.
I just do it right the first time, which means drawing leaders, text and dimension lines myself and then placing the client-specified terminator (a cell provided by the client) using "Place Active Line Terminator".
This also makes it easier to modify the drawing when I need to (which is often, as I'm sure you know!) because all the dimension lines and text are already dropped and are easier to manipulate.

What is the dimension looking like and what do you want it to look like? When you say, force the dimension line between extension lines, what do you mean? Is the dimension line defaulting to the outside? If so, the way to fix that is Element>Dimensions>Terminators>Inside. If that didn't help, please explain your situation so I can be of some assistance.
... breaks ... I agree with you when you have client-specific standards, but when you are using your own company standards, I feel that placing a "real" dimension is better and faster. It is faster to place and faster to manipulate.
