dimension callouts on assemblies

Hey, this seems like it should be a pretty basic thing to me, so excuse my inexperience with .asm files. I need to callout some dimensions, just like you'd do on a part file (distance between 2 lines, etc). When I go to sketch and select that option, I'm unable to actually click on any of the lines for the different parts that I want dimensions between. I also don't know how to get the horizontal or vertical distance between 2 parts on different planes.

You can't dimension to part edges in an assembly sketch.
Use the include command to convert the edge to a line then dimension.
Alternatively try PMI dimensions on the model not in a sketch.

To get the distances look at measuring in the help.
I usually use Minimum Distance which also gives you the X,Y and Z distances.
You can set to measure between any element or restrict the pick to faces, edges or keypoints and you can switch between these settings mid-command (so you can do edge to point)

Actually you can dimension to part edges in an assembly sketch. “Peer Edge Locate” needs to be switch on and the part needs to be activated. See the attached screenshot. In general I would recommend using PMI dimensions.

Thanks for correcting that toffeet, although I didn't do it very often I'd never had much success with dimensioning to assembly parts - now I know why !
