I have read through D1.6(2007) to see what welding 316L(A312) to a D1.1 Grp I or II material covers. We have a procedure for 316L to A36 but have a job coming up that requires 316L to A572 gr.50. I know that, with the engineers permission, you can test welders on Grp I and II material with the alloy filler but cannot find if that is true for the procedures. Is it necessary to have a procedure tested for each and every Grp I/II base metal to the 316L?

Unless the engineer permits otherwise, you are correct. For procedure qualifications, there are no provisions for grouping base materials in accordance with D1.1.

I would try to get the Engineer-of-Record to sign off on using ASME "P" groups for deciding when a new PQR is required. The AWS D1.X-series just isn't set up for qualification of bimetallic welding. Therefor, every new material combination will need a new PQR/WPS under AWS.

Duwe6, that is exactly what I was afraid that I was interpreting. I have already started dialogue through the Proj Mgr with the engineer.

Thanks!
