Design table controlled part material?

I simply assumed this was possible, but it doesn't seem to work. I have two configs (in a part) that I can manually assign different materials to. I am unable to control this material within the context of a design table.

I attempted to create the design table the way I always do, I create the two configs with different dimensions, attributes, etc and then auto-create the design table. Typically the design table will be populated with all of the parameters that it has control over. It doesn't put anything in regarding material.

I can kinda see why this might be true. The material database is an external sorta thing. But I sure would expect this to work. Am I missing something?

Shaggy18VW,

I have an SPR for this. I just checked, it is still an open issue so you are not missing anything.

Try using $PRP@Material for the DT parameter.

What SW version and SP are you using? The "auto-create" DT works fine for me with SW07-SP3.1

OK, ignore my last post ... well partially anyway.

The DT does populate itself with the config material (see image)
... but I can't see a way to specify a material for a new config from within the DT.

SolidAir ... Is that what your SPR is about? What is the SPR number?

CorBlimeyLimey,

My SPR is about adding a parameter to design tables to allow material to be set per configuration. I am not allowed to publish the SPR number (I do not know if this is a SolidWorks thing or just the policy of the company I work for). Sorry CBL

SolidAir ... Not a problem. No need to apologise.

FOr anyone wanting to check the status, I searched the SPR list and found #224056 which fits the OPs description.

For the record, I've just received confirmation from Greg Jankowski of SolidWorks that it is OK to post the SPR numbers pertaining to a SW problem. No details though ... just the SPR number.

CorBlimeyLimey,

Funny, I thought it would have been the other way around. Even with the description you had no problem finding it so why does it matter? Anyway, keep watch, maybe some day they will add that functionality.

I guess the thinking is that only subscription support customers can access the SPR list, so no details are being given away to non-legit users, or non-subscription users or competitors.

I wonder, how do you tell someone you have an SPR for a particular problem, give them the SPR number and not expect them to have any idea what the SPR is about?

Ask Greg about that, I have only met him at breakfast one morning at SolidWorks World and he was busy talking to other users so I doubt he would remember me!

[lol] Yeah it's a bit silly really ... a Catch 22 situation.

In your first reply to this thread I guess just saying, "Check SPR224056" would have covered it. But then with the problem being detailed so well in the OP, everyone would know what it was about anyway. [lol]

BTW, I've not met Greg. I just fired off an email via the SolidWorks contact page and Greg replied.

Here's your "workaround"... I'm 99% sure this will work...

Make PART-1 & assign MATL-A to it.
Then start PART-2 and insert PART-1 into it. Assign MATL-B to PART-2.
Now you have 2 identical parts of different materials. You can modify PART-1 & the changes will propogate to PART-2.

Here's another version of basically the same idea: faq559-424
