Hi there,

I'm busy with the thrust block design for a bulk gravity waterline.

Do I use the operational (dynamic) pressure and flow as input for the calculation of resultant forces, or do I use the maximum pressures during surge conditions obtained from the surge analysis?

Any logic explanation would be appreciated.

Normally, the design pressure is the maximum pressure to which the pipeline will be subjected, with consideration given to the vulnerability of the pipe-soil system when the pressure is expected to be applied. In most cases this will be the test pressure of the pipe, applied shortly after installation when the pipe-soil system is normally most vulnerable.

The test pressure is generally 50% higher than the operating pressure.

The pipeline designer should attempt to minimize the maximum pressures from surge conditions through design.

The pipeline designer must decide if the maximum operating pressure, the line test pressure, or the maximum anticipated surge pressure should be used in calculating thrust restraint. Obviously, the higher the pressure, the more restraint required.
