Hi Everyone,

I would like to design a cover plate as per the AISC to a W30x173 to help with bending moment at the end of the column. But i have no idea how to start.

Can you help me with a design guideline or a step by step approach to what to check? if there are any available design examples, please let me know where to find them.

should i add the plate to the tension or compression flange? does it work with a laterally unbraced column? what are the limit states i need to check?

I have already googled the subject and i could not find something I could follow for the check.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the resource.

I might have mislead with the word column. it is basically a beam so it doesn't need to be considered a column. it is vertical because it is resisting lateral earth pressures. but it is a beam in bending technically.

Do you have a similar resource for beam reinforcement?
