Design method used in different countries 1

Hello fellow engineers..

I'm currently looking for scholarships for master degree in structural engineering... And recently i'm interested to take it in Japan.
If any members of this forum is from Japan. May I ask you what method of designing a structure that you used there ?
Is it ASD (Allowable stress design) method or LRFD (Load Resistance force design) method ?

In my country (indonesia), our code is based on AIC and AISC so we are using LRFD method. And Is it really different than LRFD method ?

I can't speak to Japan directly, however in my experience it doesn't really matter what method you use for the majority of the design ASD and LRFD typically result in similar sizing.

But if i want to do a research in Japan. That means i can't use LRFD method right ? because all of the codes used are applied for ASD method only

That's my concenrn exactly.

Those coefficients can be a pain though with all these codes in structural.

Most of the world uses LFRD based methods now days, those using ASD just need to move into the 21st century (right?).

The only country I know of that still uses/allows ASD design is the US, I'm sure there are others though of course.

As far as I know Japan use LFRD methods.

Even if they don't, your research can follow either method, but to be taken seriously in the research field I'd like to think LFRD is the way to go to reach most of the engineering profession.

Engineers can adjust to different codes, but not everyone can adjust to Japanese. If you want to do research in Japan, you must learn the language.
