Sub: Inclined piping in Pneumatic conveying system for lifting the material
we are facing a problem in routing the inclined piping for the dense phase pneumatic conveying system.
We are executing a dense phase pneumatic conveying system for conveying coke fines at 2 tons per hour through an ERW carbon steel pipe of 80 nominal bore (pipe thickness is 4.5 mm). The conveying working pressure of compressed air is 5 bar(g) and the conveying velocity is 5 to 10 m/s. The overall conveying distance is 356 metres (of which, horizontal distance is 340m while the vertical distance is 36 metres). Due to long distance conveying, we have introduced an additional booster air supply at 5 bar(g) pressure after 150 metres conveying distance.
The conveying material is dry calcined petroleum coke and has following properties:
 Grain size: 35% minimum +4 Tyler mesh, 15% maximum- 48 Tyler mesh
 Angle of repose: 33 to 36°
 Internal angle of friction: 34 to 37°
 Angle of (sliding) friction between petroleum coke & steel pipe: 21 to 30°
 Hardgroove index: 33 to 42 (HGI) ; Design Specific gravity: 0.7
Due to supporting constraints, we want to lay the conveying pipe along the inclined gallery portion of belt conveyor. The pipe is inclined at 12° to the horizontal face and the material is lifted up through the inclined conveying pipe.
The inclined pipe has a long radius bend (R=10d) at the entry point and a slightly inclined pipe at the termination point.
Please suggest whether the above inclined conveying pipe is acceptable for satisfactory conveying.
