Does excess weld root penetration lead to life-shortening of process pipework through turbulent flow conditions? Has this been studied and recorded?
I am looking at the problems of detection of excess root penetration on process pipework when examined by the TOFD method. ASME B31.3. Table 341.3.2. gives limitations on the amount of excess penetration allowed. Radiography gives a fair qualitative idea to the experienced film interprreter. TOFD det4ection of this condition is almost impossible (hidden in the mode converted backwall indications). I would recommend trying zero degree examination of the root from the weld cap if feasible - there are means of getting over a certain amount of weld cap irregularity to introduce ultrasound.
I realise that appropriate visual weld inspection methods should be organised once the root run (or part thereof) has been completed, but unfortunately most projects have insufficient funding for quality weld inspectors to monitor for this condition.
