Does anyone know the definition of "Ribbon Footing"?

The context is for a pre-engineered structure. The architect referred to a ribbon footing. Before I show my ignorance and ask them what it is, I thought I would query this site.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Are they implying a continuous strip footing?

JAE:

That's kinda what I thought or else a thickened slab. I'm not really sure. Maybe they have terms confused themselves.

sometimes they call it a "shovel-beam"

I've never heard the term "shovel-beam" either. What does it mean, physically?

Thanks!

A "shovel-beam" is a thickened slab section or a contunious beam under a slab for an interior wall or partition. It developed a considerable time ago from "shovle me out a beam rite hear".

A ribbon footing is another name for continuous strip footing as JAE noted.
