Is there a standard or specification that provides definitions for:
-superseded, supersedes
-replaces
-alternate
-alternate, one way forward

I have a couple of company-specific definitions but would like to find something standard to use.

thanks

Yes, there is a standard: Y14.35 Revision of Engineering Drawings and Associated Documents
There is also ton of "industry standards" and "accepted practices"
Unfortunately yours is one of "larger than life" questions that are hard to answer in short post

Few common definitions from (more or less) reliable source:

Change. A specific alteration made as part of a revision of a drawing or associated list. A revision may include one or more changes.
Revision. Based on an established revision procedure, one or more changes to a drawing or associated document taking effect after initial distribution or release
Redrawn. A new original drawing of the same drawing number that has been substituted for a previous original drawing. Only the new drawing is maintained by the design activity.
Obsolete (inactive, canceled). A condition where the drawing maintenance has been discontinued by the design activity. The notation INACTIVE or CANCELED may be used in lieu of “obsolete” where applicable.
Original. The design activity’s original drawing in one of the following forms:
• A first generation reproducible drawing that has not been reduced or enlarged in scale.
• A reduced-size reproducible photographic negative or positive such as microform.
• A digital data file.
Superseded. A term used to indicate either
1) that a document has been replaced by a different document with a different identifying number or,
2) that an original has been replaced by a new original.

Extended list of standards that may contain relevant terminology:

ANSI/ASME Y14.34M — 1996, Associated Lists.
ANSI/ASME Y14.35M — 1997, Revision of Engineering Drawings and Associated Documents.
ANSI/ASME Y14.24M — 1989, Types and Applications of Engineering Drawings.
ANSI/ASME Y14.5M — 1994, Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
ANSI/ASME Y14.100M —1998, Engineering Drawing Practices (replaces DOD MIL SPEC 100).

Thanks CheckerHater, I've started with a fresh (2017) copy of ASME Y14.100 for a standard definition of alternate part (interchangeable item). Our copy of ASME Y14.35 is pretty old and doesn't show any standard notes for alternate parts, but I will look at getting the newer copy.

Thanks for your help, it gets pretty expensive to simply order multiple specifications and standards unless you know that the answer you seek is contained within.
