Went back and read the posts on that old thread. I also took a look at sections of that Gillespie book available online. You've got to love a guy that writes a 300+ page book on the subject of edge finishing!
Sadly, most engineers/designers fail to appreciate just how important edge finishing details can be until it results in a problem. It is also important to differentiate between the simple process of "deburring" and the more involved process of "edge finishing". I do design of gears/splines for aircraft applications, and the level of detail provided on engineering documentation for edge finishing is quite extensive. It is often not something that can be done correctly by hand, and there are CNC edge finishing machines designed specifically for these situations.
Definitely a topic worthy of more discussion.
