It has been a really long time since I took chemistry. I was asked to review some documents for a project I am wokring on. Some of the docs apply to the UPS and battery systems.

Can someone post or point me to the chemical reactions that are taking place and why this happens?

Right, not so much an equation here just eltroylsis of the water in the battery, H2 and O2 are formed, mostly during charging. 4% hydrogen concentration make the air flamable, 8% is explosive.

What kind of battery systems are you asking about? wet/flooded cells or AGM "gel" cells?

The latter are gas recombinant, sealed with pressure relief valves and emitting no gas, as long as they are being operated properly..

The chemistry for overall battery operation and gas recombination is explained in detail in the link below.

If you're wanting to get H2 gas production, talk to the battery manufacturer. Most have this information available.
