While perusing through the technical specs for a SICK PLS I have on hand, I got stumped on the notation used for the maximum current (see attached)

Am I just reading into things, or is the value simply 600mA?

Poorly written. Likely a switching supply that takes the current it needs plus some sort of quiescent current.

The key is the <= 17W.

At 24V;
17W/24V = 708mA

At 15V; (if it runs there)
17W/15V = 1.193A

etc.

Don't forget the added current for "external loads".
