Can somebody please explain the term 'lackering' that occurs on the surface of a cylinder liner in a diesel engine. ? As far as I know it has something to do with a chemical reaction between the lub oil and the fuel oil. Any help will be much appreciated...
Try a websearch on 'lacquering' as an alternative. The layer of material on the inside comes from oxidation of unsaturated compounds in the oils (think old-fashioned linseed-oil based paint, which cured in air).
I have seen such coating on cylinders and its appears to be a layer of fuel and oils that formed over time. such coating appeared in the form of streaks and spotty but of a hard and thin composition. Probably the result of wear on the rings.
