I am looking for a method to bleed off CO2 or Nitrogen gas from a pressurized tank in a method that will optimize the expansive cooling properties of the gas. I am planning on bleeding the gas off through a flat plate heat exchanger to cool a glycol solution in the second circuit of the exchanger.

A thought that had crossed my mind was to use a solenoid capable of withstanding the low temperatures of the cryogenic fluid...hopefully a solenoid that would be able to take pulse-width modulated input similar to that of a fuel injector to vary the quantity of compressed gas bled through the heat exchanger. This would allow optimization of maximum cooling with minimum wasted thermal mass out of the far end of the cryogenic circuit of the flat plate heat exchanger.

Of course, alternate solutions could achieve the same solution most likely. Any ideas?

well, first off, you are not going to be cryogenic. The N2 will cool down 2 degrees F per 100 psi drop.

The CO2 could get cryogenic (-40F) if you start at 600 psig. If you have a 100 psig bottle, there will be a 2 degree drop.
