We are installing a new crown wheel and pinion gear in a ships Bow Thruster. I need to shim the crown wheel to achieve the correct backlash clearance of 0.23mm, at the moment I have 2.4mm. Does anyone know of a formula for working this out????

I'd ask the manufacturer. Failing that, why isn't it just the change in backlash you want times the tan of the tooth's surface's inclination, in true view relative to the axis of the gear?

It is unlikely that the surface inclination angle is consistent throughout the depth of engagement.

I would shim as close as you dare and then re-measure.
