Criminal Charges Filed Against ETC in Pennsylvania

Due to environmental impact concerns during construction of Mariner East, ETC is facing criminal charges in Pennsylvania. The 48 charges are mostly comprised of accusations that industrial waste was released at 22 sites across the state. One felony count concerns the willful failure to report spills to environmental regulators. The maximum sentence, if Energy Transfer were found guilty, would be additional fines.
The majority of the spills involve drilling fluid. One of the larger spills was reported to leak 8,100 gallons into Marsh Creek in August of 2020. Energy Transfer has reportedly paid more than $20 million in fines and has had to pause construction numerous times. The 350 mile pipeline system is currently nearing the end of construction.
Mariner East is being built to transport propane, ethane and butane from Marcellus and Utica to the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex in eastern PA. Marcus Hook is being refurbished with the goal of rivaling the Gulf Coast.
