The only way I know of to create a square to round and be able to unfold it it the lofted bend command under sheet metal. the problem i'm having is getting a flange to come off of the square end of the square to round (on a 3 sided "half" of a square to round), so that it can be slid onto a square ductwork section. I need to be able to get the flat for the entire part. Is this possible (running soildworks 2005 currently) thanks for any help in advance i've been trying to figure this out for 2 days now.

In SW05, a flange can only be added to an edge, if the surface leading up to it, is planar.
SW06 added the ability to create a flange on a circular edge, so it may be possible in it.

we are waiting for corperate to send down 06 hopefully that solves it

the post from ctopher does not quite cover the problem i'm having that is a square to round to a base, i'm trying to add "legs" to the bottom edges of the square part to extend down so that the final product can be flatened

Can you show a pic?

I think he means something like this:-

chattlaser ... It can be modelled using regular SW functions, but cannot be created or flattened using the Sheet Metal functions. You will need to "cheat" by adding the tabs to a flattened layout config.

No ... in SW05, it doesn't matter if you add them to the formed or flattened part, you cannot get the flanges to be recognised as being part of the sheet metal model.

The "cheat" I mentioned consists of creating a separate config (not derived) of the part, then unsupressing the Flat-Pattern1 feature in the FM, and then adding the flanges. That config would then be used in a drawing view.

Another way is to add the flanges, as a sketch, in the drawing view itself.
