I'm designing an underwater (fresh water) fish screen.

Is it poor practice to use aluminum and mild steel or aluminum and hot-dipped galvanized steel in contact? Would galvanic corrosion occur?

This would be a poor couple. I would expect aluminum in contact with steel to corrode (as the anodic side of the pairing) based on standard emf charts for galvanic series. Zinc (i.e. the galvanizing) can be inert in contact with aluminum, but the broad range of aluminum on the emf charts suggests that this will be dependent on alloy. In addition, breaching of zinc will immediately start a galvanic couple between it and the steel, depleting the zinc and resulting again in the an aluminum-steel couple.
