core for a solenoid

What is a typically good material for a solenoid core? Corrosion resitance will come into play (salt air environment) and the mechanical stop is a metal face so decent impact resistance will be required. The core will be a two piece design with a stainless steel shaft and ???? conductor pressed or fixed to it in some fashion. Any suggestions?
