Does anyone know if there is a problem using Cor-ten steel posts, embedded in a concrete pier footing?
Architect wants to use 4x4 HSS as a privacy fence post. 4 ft o.c. and 6 ft tall so... not terrible loading.
I'm curious about the suitability of embedding the post directly into the concrete pier.
Currently planning on 18" diameter concrete piers with a 36" deep soil socket.

Should there be issues with expansion?
Don't want to isolate the post from the concrete too much due to the need for "rigid" anchorage.
Any experience with wrapping the post? (15# felt paper or "ice and snow guard" ? )
Would you expect hoop reinforcing to be necessary?

Thanks,
Steve

When Cor-ten steel remains constantly wet (much more likely when embedded) it does not perform any better than traditional structural steel. Steel poles in the utility industry (both galvanized and Cor-ten) that are direct embed are typically coated with a polyurethane coating such as Chemline 2261 over the embedded portion up to 2ft above the ground line to prevent corrosion.

I wouldn't anticipate any other issues with embedding the posts directly into concrete.

It seems like the concrete would offer some protection against corrosion below grade
