Can you copy a lot of files from different assys. and save them with the same numbers but with a suffix. thus retaining the originals that will not be linked.

I do this with "Save As". Perform "Save As" to a top-level assembly (create one if you need to, it doesn't have to be elaborate, just contain all your files). In the save menu, hit the "References" button and select files to rename. Use the Find/Replace function to replace ".SLD" with "suffix.SLD".

You can also add prefix or suffix in SW Explorer with Pack-and-Go.

Sorry , I forgot to add there is no assy, just a load of SW files. Getting senile in me old age.

Use Pack N Go in SW Explorer. You can add a prefix or suffix.
