Is there a way to copy and paste components to a work layer? Currently pasting always uses the layer of the copied component even if my work layer is different. I looked in the docs but was unable to find anything.

you can copy to layer
the only issue would be the copied component would be directly on top of the original
but not too big of a problem

I tried "copy to layer" from the format menu but that won't allow copying of components. Still looking...

While in the Assembly, select the Component(s) of Interest, press MB3, select the 'Properties' option and on the 'Assembly' tab you'll find a item labeled 'Layer Option' where you can edit the layer of the Component.

Well, I can still basically do the same thing by selecting the component I want to bring in again when using add component but I was just wondering if there was a simple solution like copy and paste; would rather so a simple hotkey ctrl-c/ctrl-v rather than eight or so clicks.

Hi John,
I sent my last post before I saw your reply. What I'm looking for is to place more of the same component on the work layer immediately. Are the components listed in the ANT chronologically as they are added to the assembly? If that is the case then I could select them from the ANT to move to another layer. If I cannot do that then I will have drafting issues because I may already have drawings of the previous components.

Why are you trying to create COPIES (as in DUPLICATES) of Components in the same Assembly?

And what version of NX are you running as we now (staring with NX 9.0) provide options in how the Assembly Navigator is sorted.

Sometimes there may be only a single component and then typically some drafting is done. However sometimes that same component is brought in again at different locations, a different angle or a compound angle, etc-, and more drawings are made. I will try the ANT again to see if the list is chronologically correct in regards to multiples of the same component. If not it's not a the end of the world.

Why are you not using Arrangements in your original Assembly to define different positions for your Components? You can then create Drawings using whatever Arrangement you wish. Creating duplicate Components is a very bad workflow and will lead to many issue later on that will be very hard to overcome.

I will look into it. Thank you for the tip!

John-
I looked into docs and have a question. Are arrangements intended solely for alternate positioning configurations? I really need, for example, 10 components shown simultaneously in different locations and orientations in an assembly. In this case should I be using arrangements or multiple components?

If that's what you really need, then perhaps add the same Component multiple times may be your best bet. That being said, what's all this talk about Work Layers and 'Copy & Paste'? Just add the Components where you need them.

No biggie, just layer management, really. Would love copy and paste to insert on work layer but I'll live.

;)

Why are you so hung up on 'Copy & Paste'? Just use Add Component and set the 'Replication' option to 'Repeat after Add'.

When I have some time I might try journaling. Call me crazy but I would prefer a simple hotkey sequence over many more picks and day of the week and I never intended for this many posts in this thread. I have a lot of buttons to run journals anywhere I can simplify my flow. I use a lot of journals in manufacturing but I haven't had the time to create many for design. Actually I am close to altering my ribbon menus more because even clicking once to drop down a menu doubles my clicks to do the same thing compared to my old menus. I love the new Siemens color scheme and most of the ribbon but extra clicks give me nervous ticks and skin conditions. ;) Really, even my pre-9 menus would probably be abhorred by most Siemens people; I had very few expanding menus in my pre-9 interface.

What's the problem with copy-paste components ?
to me it's just a faster way of adding multiple components. ( which i have to move as soon as pasted.)

Tomas
