Coordinate System Definition

Hi everybody, hope someone can help me with the next issue. We are a manufacturer of aluminium extrusion dies. We use SW2008 for the CAD part and Hypermill [SW Goldpartener] for 5-axis CAM-machining. The question now is if it is possible to define a new coordinate system with Z direction pointing in view direction [screen position obntained by using 3D-mouse]. This is how we sometimes judge machineability of certain corners of the die. I am looking for the fastest way to achieve this. We do not export any geometry, but stay within SW and can switch directly to Hypermill within SW. I need sometimes multiple coordinate systems to do the job

Hello. I am not exporting any geometry for the CAM. Our Hypermill is a direct plug in for Solidworks. So I can and should directly use the coordinate system(s), defined within a SW-session. But I am looking for a fast and easy way to define a new coordinate system [multiple within a part] for machining purpose. The orientation of the new-to-be-defined coordinate systems should be Z-axis pointing SCREEN-VIEW-DIRECTION

You need to model your SW parts how you will machine them within Hypermill.

Something easier than "Insert --> Reference Geometry --> Coordinate System" ?

Hi, to Chris, modelling should be independent from the machine-setup [how to handle multiple coordinate systems and/or cad-models supplied external?]. To "TheTick" in this case I need to define for example a 3D-Sketch for defining the orientation. Some CAD-systems, like Think3/Hypercad, offer the possibility to use the current view as Z-axis orientation. I am looking for some good work-around in SW.

I have always created my models based on how they sit in the machine. They have always come thru to the CAM software without any tweaking.
I have seen plenty of users create models like they are still in AutoCAD...the top is in the front plane. Then the machine shop has to rotate the model to make it work for them.

We use AutoCad, our customer use SolidWorks. How to convert SolidWorks format prints to AutoCad prints that we could balloon those drawings using our AutoCad? Thanks,

First, please start a new thread for a new topic.

Then, ask your customer to export their drawings as DXF or DWG before sending them to you.

Or buy SolidWorks and do it yourself. I don't know of any third-party software for converting .slddrw to .DXF.
