Constructed in accordance with...?

A purchase order came through that says "The system will be constructed in accordance with appropriate ASME standards...."

For the purpose of this discussion it is piping per B31.3 and B31.8, however the PO doesn't specifically say that, and the this was intentional by the customer so we wouldn't have to have these pipe spools built in an ASME shop, inspected, etc.

This was not my idea and I don't feel comfortable with it. I feel that this language really does say that we are responsible for making sure these spools are designed, built and inspected per the appropriate codes. I'm the only one that sees it this way. FYI, these are for a central american country, but in my mind it doesn't make any difference where they are installed.

Am I being too cautious? I'm interested in other opinions.

Too cautious? No. You are obligated by the P.O. Get it ammended to delete the requirement, or increase the price.

This type of questions came upon the pass. Out can only construct to the ASME STDs if the unit vessel, boiler piping is properly stamped per Code. If you ask the customer and the customer agree that no stamping is needed, then you are not obligated. In MST countries in central am, stamping is not required by the gov. Stamping is required by owners and insurance companies. I think your pro says stamping. Out there they are smarter than that and understand the requirements. most are mechanical engineers working for large corporations or rich owners who will not want an accident in their premises... El Salvador...

I agree with SnTMan, you are not being too cautious, but then, it’s your bosses’ decision. It sounds to me like the customer is saying they want it designed and built to these standards, but don’t want to pay for a bunch of the extra stuff that goes along with meeting the standards. HOWEVER, if anything goes wrong, they won’t hesitate to hang you out to dry, because you didn’t comply with those standards. Get them to amend the PO and contract, to specifically eliminate the need for those various items, inspections, tests, etc. and to hold you harmless, or watch out.
