excavating soil changes the state of stress below the excavation (reduces it) so consolidation is not likely. You could actually have some measure of heave. Excavating soil also changes the state of stress adjacent to the excavation. The removal of the soil in the pit would in turn remove the soil that's providing lateral support to the adjacent land. This could result in compression of the soil next to the pit.
