For wood beams, these HCA hinge connectors are great being able to take advantage of the efficiencies that continuous members. These are great for industrial style buildings. For more higher spec building, the architect generally wants these concealed. Are there such connecters on the market? For a concealed option, the load would presumably be transferred by bolt shear rather than bearing.

I don't understand why you couldn't do it as knife plates instead of side plates. Obviously designed accordingly to prevent rotation of the connection on the supporting beam.

Nice. I have sketched something similar but has vertical plate at the joint.

The these hinge connectors are like a shear splice. It is being places on a gravity 0.2-0.25L from place face, what design loads check do you think are required? The shear being transfer by bearing. There is should be a nominal moment check, I would think.

You've still got connection eccentricity that you need to be sure is resolved. It's not overly onerous but needs to be a concern nonetheless. You don't want your connector rotating when they drop in the second beam.
