I'm looking for a formula to calculate the force in a compression ring. I have a ring with a diameter of 50' and a uniformly distributed force of 36klf around the circumference.
Any help finding the appropriate formula is much appreciated.
It seems like that would be the correct answer if the force was all in one direction, but the force is perpendicular to the circumference. Please take a look at the two free body diagrams I've attached.
BA is correct if the loads are radial as in your sketch #2...will only result in in-plane uniform compressive stress.
Sketch #1 will result in a varying in-plane comp stress plus a varying out-of-plane moment plus shear.
