Compatibility of Ammonia Gas and Loctite Retaining Compound 1

Good day to all.

I'm very curious as to what Loctite retaining compond would be suitable for Cast iron bush retention within a Screw compressor operating on Ammonia. Essentially the bush will be supporting the main rotor shaft as I understand it.

Any assiatnce gratefully accepted.

I am guessing that you are wanting to keep your screw from backing out with vibration. I face that a lot on the equipment I design. Have you looked at a Nord-Lock? I use them a lot and they work great.

I'm not trying to do an add for them but as far as I know they are the only ones I have found that make a system like this. It is very simple but very affective. Your bolts won't back out.

They come in stainless steel so the ammonia should be a problem.

Loctite does not recommend using their product with anhydrous ammonia:

Press or shrink the bushing in place.

Hi to all,

Thank you for your response. In point of fact the bushing has been pressed into place and as a precaution retaining compound has been added. In respect to enquiring with Loctite, due to being outside of normal office hours (In New Zealand) I elected to enquire with this Engineering Tips site as the responses are normally prompt and based on personal experiences. (quite valuable)

As a matter of interest it appears that at first inspection Loctite 609 is not suitable, however, we were able to ascertain that indeed 609 would be appropriate. The rather large twin screw compressor has been rebuilt over the weekend and is on its way back to operational service.
