Hi,
I am confused about cover plates in a compound section. First of all, for cover plates in BS, it is clearly defined as outstanding element and internal elements and this corresponds to stiffened and unstiffened element in AISC i think?,,i am missing a point here?
If i am right here,i'd evaluate a cover plate in a way like that, outstanding parts (simply cantilever) of the cover plate as unstiffened, and the internal part as stiffened element. In the attachement, there is my section now. And there are two cover plates...If i consider the local buckling/compactness as i mentioned above, is there any mistake? how would i think of that?
Another question is, i've heard that, cruciform sections as non-compact but i don't understand why? if i do my checks in the AISC code, isn't that enough? Sincerely,thanks for your help..
