Hi everyone

Quick question.. we have a rigid pavement construction with subgrade ,subsbase ( engineered soil) ,base course (gravel) and finally concrete slab.

The contractor compacts subgrade and subbase course with a roller, but I wonder if base course (gravel) also need to be compacted?

For most situations, yes. Normally any job like you seem to have has a set of specifications to follow and that document would spec the degree of compaction.

Agree with OG...

Generally for a rigid pavement you have a subgrade and a graded aggregate subbase, with no base course. Here in Florida we often put rigid pavements directly on a compacted or stabilized sand subgrade...example, the original runways at Orlando International Airport are on compacted sand.

Thank you all
