Hi,

I have a wood stud and I'm fixing another wood element (cantilevar) (see image attached) how do you determine the how the column (stud) will bend and how to calcultate the flexure ?

Thank you for any help

with no backspan to the cantilever, the column would be analyzed with an axial load and a concentrated moment equal to P*cantilever length. If there is a backspan then the moment distributes based on stiffness. You should be able to find a formula for a beam with concentrated moment. Note this will add significant P Delta effects to the column.

Pretty simple homework problem. Not sure as a structural engineer I would put this out there showing I dont know how to do this.

1. Consider the top support. Is it as you have shown, i.e. hinged or should it be a vertical roller?

2. If it is a vertical roller, what are the reactions to the applied load?

3. From those reactions, draw a moment diagram for the stud.

4. Using Moment-Area principles, what is the rotation at height x, say θx?

5. Using Moment-Area principles, what is the maximum deflection of the column, neglecting P-Δ effects?

6. Δ1 = e*θx + normal cantilever deflection for concentrated load at end of cantilever.

7. How will axial load affect moments, rotations and deflections?

8. How will you fix the cantilever to the stud? Will you have additional rotation at the connection?
