Hi Guys,

Is there and code requiremen for length of weld at column to base plate connections. We have a situation where fabricator provide 2 X 3" length weld on flanges of W310 column and webs are not welded. We havn't mention this before on drawings to be fully welded but what fabricator shall follow as per code regarding this conenction.

We spec out that the load is to be 5% of the vertical load taken as a horizontal load. Sounds like they need to add some welds!

5% of load looks fine, but is there any minimum code requirement unless fabricator ends up with 1" weld. There might be some miniumum requirement also from code.

No.

My standard detail shows full lenght fillet welds on the outside of the flange on one side and two shorter fillet welds on the inside of the opposite flange with web welds from the fillet of the web-flange interface.

The flange welds allow the column to be fabricated without turning it over.

I should have added that for HSS columns, I weld all around since the loading is concentrated in the corners.

Your standard detail is fine, if u provided it before tender. Is there anything fabricator to follow for this, if we havn't specify.
