High seismic (SDC: D), 2-story steel special moment frames
The architectural constraints of this building do not allow for braced frames due to the clear spans needed and many openings for windows, doors, etc. I have ran several iterations with different column locations, orientations, number of columns, etc. and the smallest columns I can get to satisfy the SC/WB ratio are W12x96 with the largest being a W14x257.
I know in SMF's the economy is in larger member sizes and less connection detailing, BUT in this case, let's assume column size is the driving factor - not economy. Is there a realistic option in achieving a smaller column or am I stuck at an impasse and it is what it is?
