Can anyone explain the benefit of cold rolling of API connections?

The method of cold rolling is, I beleive, to form a compressive layer to the root of the thread using a roller, this roller only touches the root of the thread, not the flanks.

Why does the root get treated? when only the flanks have any contact, attached is a full scale sketch of a NC50 connection drawn to Drilco spec. and clearly shows that there is no contact at the roots of both Pin & Box
