cohesive elements

Hi, I have jsut started to use cohesive elements and am very confused. for example consider i have two parts with a cohesive layer in between. I create one part, then create an orphan mesh on that so as to make the cohesive layer. When I assemble the two parts together in the the assembly module, do I instance just the two parts, or the two parts plus the orphan mesh?? how do i constrain it so that the top part comes to "attach" wtih the cohesive elements?
