Closed or open bonnet on relief valve 2

Dear all,

How can I decide whether to have open of closed bonnet? And what’s it’s significance.
I may have asked completely basic question but I want to understand…

Steam boiler valves (ASME Sec I applications) will automatically have open bonnets because that's a detail which is mandated by Sec I code (helps to cool the spring). Pressure vessel safety valves (Sec VIII) are not required to have an open bonnet. So, an open or closed bonnet stems from the application code.

Open bonnet can be used for cooling the spring provided there is no harm in releasing the system fluid into the atmosphere. Valves meant for steam applications are provided with open bonnet / closed bonnet with vent open

I believe ‘Vented Bonnet’ and ‘Open Bonnet’ are same?. Please comment.

Also, I thought ‘Open Bonnet’ and ‘Closed Bonnet’ has something to do with balanced bellows type valve? Is it not so?

Vented Bonnet may not be as open as a Steam PSV's* Open Bonnet.

Closed Bonnet is for containing the relieving fluid, AND PRV's with bellows require a Closed Bonnet to protect the bellows.

*PSV - Pressure Safety Valve - is what ASME & API call the special subset of PRV's - Pressure Relief Valves - that are optomized for Boiler and steam service. Besides the open bonnet, there is also an S-shaped manual venting lever "Try Handle".

When the metal plug on a closed bonnet is removed it becomes vented bonnet. Open vent hole are optionally fitted with bug screen. The spring in the vented bonnet is protected from sun and rain as it is not exposed to outside.
Open bonnet is one which is made of casting and the spring is exposed completely. Coded steam safety valves are provided with open (yoke type ) bonnet.

...AND PRV's with bellows require a Closed Bonnet to protect the bellows

Valves fitted with bellows should necessarily have the bonnet vent plug removed so that the bellows is protected against the effect of any untoward increase in bonnet chamber pressure during valve operation.

The levers are meant to de-pressurise the system pressure in a situation like forced shutdown of the plant operations, etc..
