close footings

In order to check the effect of two footings close to each other I used Stuart, J.G. (1962) paper "Interference between foundations with special reference to surface footings in sand.’’ Geotechnique, 12(1),15–23.The same method is described in Das's book.
My question is how to estimate the distance in each case (Stuart has 4 cases)?

The effect will be some midway point between two independent foundations and a strip footing. Use some judgement.
