Hey guys, I have the case which is no root opening for single bevel groove weld, is it acceptable? My detailer didn't provide any cut for root opening.

Is this a detail for plate repair?

If AWS were the governing code it would not be a pre-qualified weld, and a WPS would be needed.

Is the plate only 1/4" thick? Some options would be to grind the bevel out to an acceptable root opening, or grind to a square butt weld.

In lieu of altering the root opening, you could replace the backing bar with backgouging and re-welding the root.

From the designation of the plate I would guess it's 6mm (< 1/4"), but it's just a guess.

The "PL6x25" designation should be the backing bar size. Correct, in "mm".

Yes okay, so we generally need root opening? or doesn't it matter?

Thanks in advance!!

For pre-qualified CP weld, yes, I believe. See the linked PDF, Fig. 2.4, on p26.
