My company is involved with repairing large universal drive shafts for industry. We have a unit returned we repaired in the past. We had to chrome plate the bore of one of the flange yoke. The bore is where the bearing is pressed in, and the bore Ø had exceeded the tolerance limit, thus we chrome plated the bore and remachined to provide the proper fit. Looking at it now, some of the plating is missing, chipped off. What percent of the plating surface area can be lost and still provide a good press before it needs to be replated? Is there any standard out there?

If the remaining plating is sound, consider the plating area remaining in bearing with an appropate safety factor.

Have you considered electrochemical deposition of metal brush plating repair or HVOF replacement with tungstine carbide?
