hi,

im new here. would appreciate thoughts on best way to inspect straightness of line elements of a pin or shaft. my assumption is to run an indicator along the pin length at various points around circumference but whats best way to keep indicator tip from running off course?

Just roll the shaft on a surface plate. If you can get a gauge pin of equal diameter to the straightness tolerance under it at any point, then the shaft is out of straightness tolerance.
