I have a long series of charts (approx. 10 feet) that I need to extract data from. Is there any software that can read from a scanned picture of the chart (in A4 bits) and extract the chart values, whilst excluding the chart background?

There are a number of programs that can potentially do this. Tracer is one such program. You'll simply have to experiments to find out.

If there's any kind of segmentation between the curve and the graph background, such as color, there may be some chance.

Thanks IR. The Tracer software, you mentioned, I found on the web but appears to be for bar codes in shops. Whether there is another for scanning along a chart I don't know. I did find one, however, that can do charts from an A4 scan, which will save me a lot of time and effort.

i've tried several programs for this tasks, the best i found out was Engauge Digitizer

it's also free, opensource, available for win32 and linux.

Anyway it's worth a try

Hope that helps
