Anyone have any experience centerless grinding silicon nitride? Would like to run some screening tests for either infeed or thrufeed centerless, but don't have a feel for infeed/thrufeed rates. The material is a high tensile strength silicon nitride (~1000 MPa characteristic strength).

Hi Jab, Well ive been working with advanced ceramics for about 15 years now. Ive done quite a bit of centerless grinding over the years .Very familiar with Silicon Nitride
This material doesnt disapate heat very well So you must take realitively light passes about .0005/.001" max depth of cut,run regulating roll at top speed and adjust your guides to achive about 5FPM. May sound slow but it is reasonable.Use a resin bond diamond wheel 150 grit for roughing 500 grit for finishing passes. Well I hope ive been able to provide some help to you . Bye Zycron
