CE mark required for CTs

Can anyone, especially you European Folks, tell me anything about CE requirements for instrument transformers, and more specifically CTs. I have encountered this request several times and no one can tell me if they are even covered in any standard or if any testing body has ever approved compliance for these products. I keep running into dead ends here.

I would appreciate any and all comments on this subject.

I'm not an expert by any means, but the CE mark is applied to an end-product and not to components. I think you could class a CT as a component. Components can often be applied in many different ways, so one design using that component might meet the requirements for CE marking and another design might not.

Maybe a post in one of the manufacturing forums would yield a more authoratative response? Put a link in to this thread if you do cross-post.

As Scotty hints, even people who know what they are doing have trouble with CE marking!

Strictly speaking, my understanding is that the manufacturer "CE marks" to state compliance with a European Directive.

There has been a "Low Voltage Directive" for example, so a CT could be CE marked to state compliance.

I understand from a friend that distribution transformers for example, are not CE marked because on the low voltage side, they are part of other low voltage equipment, so the overall assembly should be CE marked, on the High Voltage (Medium Voltage (MV) for mainland Europe....) side, there has not been a "High Voltage Directive", so there is nothing to CE mark to!

Like Scotty, I would like to meet anyone who

a) understands all this
b) Sees the purpose of it

Since in the UK we see "European" electrical equipment which is "CE marked" but does not meet UK regulations, custom,practice and Risk Assessments! And for which you could go to jail!

As I say to people who say "but this is what they do in Italy" (sorry Italy) : HSE are not going to prosecute you in Italy, but they will do in the UK!
