Are there any major difference between the latest 2013 California BC and ASCE 7-10 for seismic design? I recall that in the previous codes some of the R values were different between the two but I can't seem to find any differences.

I don't reside in CA and use CBC only occasionally.

Provided the project is not a hospital (OSHPD 1), correctional treatment facility (OSHPD 4) or public school (DSA-SS), there are not a lot of differences in the seismic design. The CBC can be viewed online at If the project is one of the aforementioned, look at chapter 16A section 1616A for modifications to ASCE 7. If it is a community college (DSA-SS/CC) look at chapter 16 section 1616.

If it is a state owned or leased essential service facility, it may also need to follow the chapter 16A requirements. I can't remember, but all of these classifications are in chapter 1 of the CBC. If you are not familiar with California's matrix adoption tables, the states guidebook might help (a little)
