Cavitation increase power consumption??

when troublshooting a pump stop, I heard somebody saying that the increase of power consumption was due to cavitation. Is it reasonable to think so??

One reason I can think of, for a centrifugal pump otherwise working properly to consume too much power is when the pump operates too far out on its head-capacity curve, necessitating a higher NPSH, and as concurrent result starts cavitating at the so-called cutoff capacity.
 
cavitation limits the discharge flow of the pump.
first indication of cavitation is a drop in efficiency, even before other signs are present - e.g. noise. (karassik)

in radial pumps (low Specific speed) cavitation may be detected as a drop in power consumption (HP curve rises with increasing flow)

in axial pumps (high specific speed) cavitation may be detected as an increase in power consumption (HP curve rises with decreasing flow)
