Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I was hoping to get some advice as to which direction I should take in my career.

I am 37 yrs old and graduated when I was 30. I worked for a mining consulting EPCM company for a year and was laid off because of the recession. Since then I have been working as a mechanical designer(AutoCAD only) for various companies. I feel if my career is at a stand still.

I want to go back to school to either study HVAC or move to Calgary and take the process piping program ($15,000)at SAIT. I love doing piping so I don't mine becoming a piping designer, but I wonder if it is worth it. I very much want to work in the oil and gas industry at any capacity, but I don't know if my experience can cut it. I read that it is oil and gas industry is very competitive. But there seem to be quiet a few jobs in HVAC.

So I was wonder if with my experience (one year mining consulting EPCM and 5 years mechanical design), would I have any chance to find a job in an engineering firm related to the oil and gas industry in Alberta.

Fifty plus years ago, my favorite professor regaled us with a tale of his trip, when he was our age, in a Model T, to see the vast Tar Sands of Alberta.

Aren't they mining the hell out of those right now?

Frank Abagnale managed to get into a bunch of jobs with zero experience and faking his way through most of his actual work duties. Most employers are buying YOUR confidence in being able to do the job. If you are confident in your resume, your presentation, and your interviews, you'll be miles ahead of most applicants.
