i know it stands for american national standard institute. i can see it in their website. i am more interested with what is their function like aisc for steel, aci for concrete,

thanks,

The website provides the answers.

provides an overview of what they do. AS the sole US represntative for ISO, they are very heavy on ISO conformity assessment.

Standards Development-one thing that must be made clear, ANSI does not develop standards but it coordinates their development and use.

ANSI has an accreditation program for Standards Developers It has accredited almost 300 Standards Developers; examples: ACI, AISC, AWS etc. AWS D1.1 for instance is an ANSI standard. Not sure if ACI 318-08 is.

delagina...in addition to henri2's comments and links, ANSI standards have often preceeded other standards or have been incorporated in such.

One example is ASCE 7, a commonly used treatise. The first publication of ASCE 7 came about in 1988. It was based, almost entirely on ANSI A58.1, and ultimately replaced A58.1 in its application.

ANSI's scope of work is much broader than the organizations discussed. In addition to materials and standards for civil / structural engineering, ANSI documents cover other fields (electrical, mechanical, chemical, etc.).

ANSI even addresses a wide variety of finished, manufactured products such as helmets, contact lens, electric motors and bicycle parts. As henri2 and Ron pointed out, many of these ANSI standards are issued jointly with other standards groups.
